Do I need to pay staff for opening and closing times?

A common question we get asked is, “do I need to pay staff for opening and closing times?” So, what is the answer?

As an employer, you are required to pay your staff for their time. If you expect them to arrive early to open up your business or stay late, you must pay them. This requirement also extends to other things like attending work-related events, such as training or meetings.

Whether it’s during or outside of their standard hours, if you require them to be there then it counts as time worked and it must be paid.
