Common Awards and Public Holiday Rates
Here is a selection of public holiday pay rates for common awards. These details are subject to change, so view the award on the Fair Work website for the most up-to-date information.
Queensland Public Holidays
In Queensland, the following days over the Christmas period are a public holiday:
- 24th December: Public holiday rates apply from 6:00 pm to midnight.
- 25th December: Public holiday rates apply all day.
- 26th December: Public holiday rates apply all day.
- 27th December: Because Boxing Days falls on a weekend, the following Monday is a public holiday. Public holiday rates apply all day.
Public Holiday Pay Rates

Full-Time and Part-Time Employees
Typically, full-time and part-time employees receive a paid day off on a public holiday. They receive their ordinary rate of pay. However, as an employer, you can ask a full-time or part-time employee to work on a public holiday. The request must be reasonable and you are required to pay the relevant penalty rate as outlined in their award.
Firstly, check your employee’s agreement or award for pay rate details and other conditions relevant to public holidays. Casual employees are only paid on a public holiday for hours worked, and receive the pay rate as stipulated in their award.
