Public Holiday Pay Rates
Firstly, when determining what pay rate you are required to pay staff on a public holiday, you must check the relevant award. For a full list of awards, visit the Fair Work website. Not sure what award your employees fall under? Use the free award finder tool on the Fair Work website.
Full-Time and Part-Time Employees
Typically, full-time and part-time employees receive a paid day off on a public holiday. They receive their ordinary rate of pay. However, as an employer, you can ask a full-time or part-time employee to work on a public holiday. The request must be reasonable and you are required to pay the relevant penalty rate as outlined in their award.
Firstly, check your employee’s agreement or award for pay rate details and other conditions relevant to public holidays. Casual employees are only paid on a public holiday for hours worked, and receive the pay rate as stipulated in their award.
